Andrea Mitchell: Palin Won’t Run in 2012
6:31 pm
Mitchell says she’s been talking to people very close to Palin who say that the Governor will not run in 2012. Mitchell reports that Palin is “out of politics, period.”

Sarah’s Gambit?
6:13 pm
News concerning the upcoming resignation of Alaska Governor and Conservative superstar Sarah Palin is spreading like wildfire across the media. Palin announced that she not only will opt not run for reelection, but won’t even finish this month out as Governor.
There are a number of interesting theories concerning the Governor’s decision. Palin, in her announcement, essentially noted that the barrage of smear attacks, media assaults and ethics complaints were the reasons behind her decision to resign on the 26th of July.
I would like to believe that this is a political gambit that would ultimately one day result in Sarah Palin officially signing documents with the FEC to run for President in 2012. But my better judgment is telling me to take Palin by her word.
Erick Erickson perhaps put it best:
Her children are routinely attacked and turned into the butt of late night jokes by left wing comedians.
I’d want the target off my back and my kids’ backs too.
We’ll have more on this as it unfolds.
Rubin: Obama’s Anti-Surge
10:45 pm
Great article here from Michael Rubin outlining how our recent drawdown in Iraq could possibly backfire.
Via WaPo:
Today is a milestone in Iraq. Under the terms of the Strategic Framework Agreement, U.S. troops will withdraw from Iraqi cities. In retrospect, however, June 30 will likely mark another milestone: the end of the surge and the relative peace it brought to Iraq. In the past week, bombings in Baghdad, Mosul and near Kirkuk have killed almost 200 people. The worst is yet to come.
While the Strategic Framework Agreement was negotiated in the twilight of the Bush administration, President Barack Obama shaped the final deal. He campaigned on a time line to withdraw combat troops from Iraq, and his words impacted the negotiation.
Uh Oh: Sanford Admits to Affair
2:49 pm
Sad day for Republican politics. After an eerie turn of events which left an entire state unaware of the whereabouts of their Governor, GOP power player and possible presidential contender Mark Sanford has admitted to having an affair with a woman from Argentina.
Via AP:
The married father of four emotionally apologized to his wife, staff and others after returning Wednesday from a trip to Argentina that followed a dayslong absence. He staff had said the Republican was hiking on the Appalachian Trail.
He had been a rumored contender for the 2012 GOP ticket. A former congressman, he’s most recently snared headlines for his unsuccessful fight to turn aside federal stimulus cash for his state’s schools.

Which Way GOP?
5:24 pmAfter a very weak showing in the 2008 election, many Republicans-both authentic and self proclaimed-have begun asking themselves how to rebuild the Grand Old Party. Some “moderate” Republicans claim that the best way to move the GOP forward is to move the party closer to the center; that the party should sacrifice its conservative base in favor of gaining more popularity among minority and independent voters. In order to capture these votes, moderates would like to see the party adopt a far more moderate immigration strategy, relax their moral and ethical stance on divisive issues such as gay marriage and abortion, and tone down the party’s rhetoric regarding government non-intervention in the economy. With the number of minority and independent voters growing rapidly, this strategy of moving to the center would seem like the natural course for a struggling party.
But others in the Republican party are terrified of this new direction. They claim that sacrificing values for political expediency is not only wrong, but it simply wont work. These conservatives want the GOP to remain the advocates of small government, low taxes, laissez faire economics, freedom of the individual, and the protection of life. But how can these conservatives account for the growing numbers of minority and independent voters, who are said to be lost if they stick with their conservative principles? The idea is simple: conservatism works, liberalism fails.
President Obama is the epitome of a liberal Democrat. His ideology, his policies, and his rhetoric are exactly what we have come to expect from the Left, and so far they have and will continue to fail to make America and American’s prosperous and safe. The American people will be painfully reminded of this as President Obama leads our country closer and closer to economic ruin. Through his collectivist polices, President Obama will remind Americans that liberalism does not work, but come election time, it must be the GOP standing on the Right reminding them that conservatism does. The closer to the center the GOP moves, the less powerful their message will be. How can Republicans claim to have the solutions to the country’s woes, when for their entire time in office they have been complicit in the liberal’s destruction of our country?
If the GOP wishes to reclaim power in the coming years, they must remain true to their conservative principles. Doing so will not only win them votes, but make a America a strong, safe, and prosperous country.

What’s Happening in Tehran
10:11 pm
As Election Day nears in Iran, we’re seeing the already intense campaign heat up even more. According to WaPo, Mir Hossein Mousavi – the wild card challenger – is inspiring a number of demographics to stand behind him in his quest to unseat President Ahmadinejad.
Via WaPo:
Each night, tens of thousands of youths gather in Tehran’s main squares to cheer their support for a man who just a month ago they barely knew by name. Mousavi has emerged as the only serious alternative for those who oppose the policies of Ahmadinejad, who has the support a small group of hard-line clerics and some influential members of Iran’s Revolutionary Guard Corps.
“Mousavi will make us free,” a girl shouted from a car Saturday night, waving at the masses of young supporters. “I don’t really know who he is. But he is the only one that can beat Ahmadinejad.”
The President is apparently feeling the heat. The AP has reported that Ahmadinejad has put forth a full scale smear campaign on his challenger to the throne, causing Mousavi to issue a letter to Ayatollah Ali Khamenei complaining of the President’s attempts to derail the campaign.
Via AP:
Former Prime Minister Mir Hossein Mousavi wrote a letter to Iran’s supreme leader, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, accusing Ahmadinejad and his supporters of taking unethical steps against his campaign.
In an unusual twist for elections in Iran, the presidential campaign has descended into bitter personal attacks between candidates. Khamenei, who has final say on all state matters in Iran, has urged the contenders and their supporters to exercise restraint.
That call has gone unheeded, and a handful of political figures who are not even running in the campaign — as well as some of their relatives — are threatening to sue Ahmadinejad for publicly accusing them of corruption.
It will be rather interesting to see how this final week unfolds. I’m not exactly sure what a Mousavi victory will mean for us, but I do know that the man played a role in the Islamic Revolution and had some pretty frightening views on women’s rights. Although unlike Ahmadinejad, he does believe in the legitimacy of the Holocaust. Word.
